Episode 35: Utah CFP Class

I took the Utah concealed carry class last Tuesday, and here's a summary of my experience.  Also, my Saturday didn't go anything like I had planned.  I had intended to go to the gun show and talk with the inventor of the GhostBelt to see where I may be wrong.  Instead, we made a trip to the emergency vet's office because my cat suddenly lost all balance and coordination.  I've spent this week doing occuational therapy with her, and she's getting better.  Prayers, good thoughts, and healing energy sent her way would be most welcome.

Episode 34: Continuum Continued

Episode 32 was more popular than I thought.  Here I share some listener feedback I got and expand on that.  Also, my friend who told me about the continuum got back with me.  I touch on HR822, sparring focus, and sling (think David and Goliath) construction.

Episode 33: Ghostbelt vs Fanny Pack

I don't exactly do product reviews as such; I just share my experiences and observations.  I also like comparing products.  Here I compare apples with pears (not oranges) when I look at fanny packs and ghostbelts for concealed carry.

Episode 32: Continuum of Force

Remembering a conversation from 28 years ago, I apply the Shaolin continuum of force and adapt it to concealed carry.  At the time, the gradient went: block, check, stun, maim, kill.  That seemed incomplete to me at the time, so at the low end I added in my approach evade and deflect.

For concealed carry, I also added avoid, and elude because discretion is the greater part of valor.

Episode 31: Eye Dominance

Why is an anniversary dinner at a nice restaurant (Terra's in
West Columbia) relevant to eye dominance?  Simple - because I
hate buying pants.  An approach to cross-dominance that we don't
hear too much about is strengthening the non-dominant eye.

Here's a nice restaurant for special occasions in West Columbia;
you can't get a meal for 2 at the Melting Pot for this price:

Episode 30: Laser Trainers

Dry fire is an important part of your handgun practice.  The SIRT pistol is great practice if you have a Glock.  I don't.  You may not either.  The Laserlyte laser trainer is supposed to be a one size fits all, and it works well for most.  The trouble is that the rod is too long to work in a snubby, and strikers tend to knock it loose.  Here's my experience with one.

Episode 29: On Flash Mobs

Flash mobs: they started out as nifty choreographed bits of performance art for the people's entertainment and artistic expression.  Then they turned into thieving mobs that accreted in stores to shoplift and vandalize.  I spout off on some things that you'd like to do, but of course you can't.

Now it's gotten ugly.  Packs of human hyenas are now swamping areas that people always considered safe and strong-arm robbing and beating the snot out of innocent people.

In response, the good citizens of the Philadelphia area are starting to apply for their concealed weapons permits, and the media is having kittens about that.

Here's the video

In contrast, Bruce Eimer has an article in Human Events that takes a rational and measured approach to self defense in a flash mob scenario.

Episode 28: Airgun Projectiles

Here’s a rundown of different projectiles that you can use in various airguns.
BBs, pellets, darts, bolts, and other oddities.

It turns out that 1.21 gigawatts of electricity really can throw you back to the year 1955.

Episode 27: The Naked Gun

I heard the best radio commercial ever last week.  You guessed it; Palmetto State Armory is having another sale!  This time they have silencers for 10% off through the end of July.  I never thought I’d hear an ad like that on the radio, but when you do, you know you’re living in a free state.

Mexican carry – the naked gun.  Turns out it is not a slam, but a historical fact.  Read this: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_2_51/ai_n8591504/

Carrying this way can have its problems, but for a few well-spent bucks you can get accessories to make it a lot safer and more secure.  Check out these possibilities:

Episode 26: Airgun Operating Systems

This is a basic rundown of the most common operating systems for airguns: pneumatic, CO2, and spring-piston.  Also, here's a link to a very clear article about hoplophobia:

Oh... sorry if you got an error message when you tried to download my last release.  Just after I published episode 25, I re-posted episode 23 and blew out the bandwidth on my free hosting service.  Dang! I should have taken Mark Vanderberg's good advice to upgrade my account just a day earlier.  My bad.  It won't happen any more.

Episode 23: Acquiring Lead

They just can’t help themselves, can they?  I won’t take away your guns.  Really?  What they can’t legislate, they’ll regulate.  EPA, you’re losing your credibility with this proposed lead ammo ban.  Reload.  Cast your own bullets while you still can.  Where can you get lead? http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/epa-reviewing-request-ban-led-bullets

Episode 25: Skeet Scat: A Tale of Two Asses

I recognize that I'm fairly useless with a shotgun.  Until my last outing to the range with my stepson, I had only ever taken one shot at clay.  I missed.  I did much better this time than I thought I would.

There's a new improvement on the traditional stink bomb out there.

Also, it gets hot in SC, and sitting down in this heat can hold some awkward surprises.

Episode 22: Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy isn’t just a new-age health practice; sometimes you need those nitrocellulose fumes more than sage and lilac.   Breda had a post at http://www.thebredafallacy.com/2011/03/how-it-starts.html about a local reporter who took an important step to get over her fear of guns.  She took a CCW class.  Here’s a link to her article: http://www.cleveland.com/pdq/index.ssf/2011/03/from_gun-shy_to_gun-savvy_weap.html

I’ll be on America’s Radio Show tonight.  Here’s a link to that show: http://woic.com/skin/elink.php?url=www.americasradioshow.com

Episode 21: The SKS Firing Pin

A new SKS rifle is a wonderful thing, but you have a lot of work to do before you try to fire it.  First you have to get all the cosmoline off it (and out of it), then be sure your firing pin is free.  The SKS has a floating firing pin, and if it gets gunked up and stuck in the forward position you could get slam firing.  Bad juju.

A lot of things here have been breaking, wearing out, and going down.  The latest was my computer.  I fixed it up, and now it's running well enough to play Doom 3.  That's one SCARY GAME!  Here's how I apply the game to real life and real life to the game.

Episode 19: Triumphant Gunsmithing

I'm pretty tickled with myself. I managed to fix 2 guns all on my lonesome. Okay, I did get some instructions on youtube and from a book, but they're back in action.
The book was The Gun Digest Book of Firearms Assembly/Disassembly Part 2: Revolvers, 2nd Edition, by J.B. Wood.

Episode 18: I Miss My Fun Guns

I miss my fun guns. Since the ammo shortage, I've been reluctant to shoot a lot. I know it's pretty much over, but I'm still conserving. Also, time is at a premium and all my efforts have been geared toward concealed carry defensive practice and teaching new shooters.

My favorite gun is still in pieces, too. I got the replacement parts at Numrich. Here's a link: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/

I have to promise myself to always bring a fun gun with me when I go to the range.
